The End of Petrol Cars: What the 2035 Ban Means for You

The UK government has set a clear target: petrol and diesel cars will be banned from sale by 2035. This landmark decision is part of a broader plan to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner, greener transport across the country. But what exactly does the 2035 ban mean for drivers, car owners, and the future of motoring in the UK? Let us break down the key points.

What Is the 2035 Petrol and Diesel Ban?

In February 2023, the UK government announced that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans will be banned from 1 January 2035. This means that from this date onwards, all new cars sold must be zero-emission vehicles. These include electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, or other zero-tailpipe-emission technologies.

This policy updates an earlier target of 2040, bringing the ban forward by five years in response to the urgent need to tackle climate change.

What Cars Are Affected?

    • New petrol and diesel cars and vans: Sales of these vehicles will no longer be permitted from 2035.
    • Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs): These will also be banned from sale after 2035 unless they meet stricter zero-emission requirements.
    • Electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen vehicles: These will remain fully legal and encouraged as alternatives.

It is important to note that the ban applies to new sales only. Petrol and diesel cars already on the road can still be driven, bought and sold second-hand after 2035, at least for some time.

Why Is the UK Introducing This Ban?

The transport sector accounts for nearly a third of the UK’s carbon emissions, with road vehicles contributing the lion’s share. Moving away from petrol and diesel cars is a major step toward the government’s broader goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The ban encourages manufacturers to focus on zero-emission vehicle technology and pushes consumers to adopt cleaner alternatives sooner.
