As temperatures soar during the summer months, many electric vehicle (EV) drivers begin to notice subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle changes in their vehicle’s performance. While EVs are generally more efficient and require less maintenance than petrol or diesel counterparts, they are not immune to the effects of hot weather. From reduced range to battery wear, high temperatures can impact how your EV performs.
In this blog post, we’ll explore how hot weather affects your EV, what you can do to mitigate these issues, and how Tap Zap Go is making it easier for drivers to manage seasonal challenges through smart charging infrastructure and customer-focused innovation.
Battery Efficiency and Hot Weather
The heart of every EV is its battery, and just like you wouldn’t want to be stuck outside under the blazing sun for hours, neither does your car’s battery pack. EV batteries are designed to operate best within a moderate temperature range, typically around 15°C to 25°C. When temperatures climb well above this, several things can happen:
- Reduced range: The battery management system kicks in to cool the battery, using up valuable charge.
- Faster degradation: Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce battery lifespan over time.
- Longer charging times: Some EVs slow the charging rate during extreme heat to prevent overheating.
Air Conditioning: A Range Robber
Keeping your cabin cool is essential for comfort, but it comes at a cost. EV air conditioning systems draw power directly from the battery. On a scorching day, blasting the AC can noticeably affect your range, especially on smaller EV models or those with older batteries.
Tip: Many EVs allow pre-conditioning while plugged in. Cooling the car before setting off means you use mains electricity rather than draining the battery while driving.
Tyres, Brakes, and Fluids
Though EVs have fewer moving parts than combustion vehicles, hot weather can still affect other components:
- Tyre pressure: Heat causes tyre pressure to rise, which may lead to uneven wear or reduced grip. It’s advisable to check pressures more frequently during hot spells.
- Brake efficiency: EVs use regenerative braking, which is less affected by heat than traditional systems, but still, excessive heat can affect braking distances if your car relies more on standard friction brakes during spirited or downhill driving.
Interior Comfort and Sun Damage
Direct sunlight on your car can raise the interior temperature by up to 30°C above the outside temperature. This affects comfort and can damage interior surfaces over time. Hot interiors can also cause batteries in infotainment systems, smartphones, and dash cams to overheat.
To prevent this:
- Use sunshades on the dashboard.
- Park in shaded areas where possible.
- Tint windows (where legal) to reduce solar gain.
Charging in Hot Weather
Charging your EV during the peak of the day can sometimes be problematic. Not only is the electricity grid under more demand, but fast-charging generates heat, which adds to the strain on the battery. Most modern EVs will regulate charge rates to prevent overheating, but this might slow the charging process.
To optimise charging:
- Charge early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.
- Use charging points with proper shade or thermal design, like our Tap Zap Go chargers.
Tap Zap Go: Charging Smarter in Any Weather
