Big Boost for EV Drivers: Over 2,000 New Charging Points Added Across the South East

EV Chargers across south east UK

The electric vehicle (EV) revolution is gaining serious momentum in the South East of England, with over 2,000 new public EV charge points added in the past year. According to new government figures, this represents a 29% increase since April 2024, bringing the total number of public chargers in the region to more than 9,200.

This significant expansion is part of a £2.3 billion government investment aimed at helping drivers make the switch to electric. A further £200 million is being used to accelerate the rollout of rapid charging points across the country.

Local councils across the region are also stepping up their efforts:

  • Kent County Council has been awarded more than £12 million from the Department for Transport to boost its charging network

  • Surrey County Council has pledged to install 10,000 devices at 1,500 locations by 2030

  • Brighton & Hove City Council secured a £2.8 million grant to fund 500 new charge points each year for the next three years

  • West Sussex County Council has received £5.5 million to support the installation of up to 1,000 new charging points
